Femtosecond laser micromachining has been a promising technique for fabricating three-dimensional (3D) micro/nano-structures in various kinds of dielectric materials with unprecedented spatial resolutions as well as flexibility in terms of the geometry and the materials can be processed. This unique capability opens opportunities for fabrication of 3D high-quality (Q) microresonators, which are one of the key elements in modern photonic applications. Here I will present our recent progress in fabrication of 3D microresonators on various dielectric substrates using femtosecond laser direct writing. The materials include glass (either passive or active glass materials) and nonlinear optical crystals such as lithium niobate. Microlasers and nonlinear optics based on these microcavities are demonstrated. Finally, I’ll present a simple method to fabricate high-quality ultra-small fiber-tip micromirror which is made with assistance of CO2 laser micromachining. With such micromirror, a tunable open FP microcavity can be constructed with high cavity to fiber coupling efficiency.
